Lewmar Equipped Matador Triumphs at TP52 World Championships

Alberto Roemmers’ team earns the 2009 TP 52 World Championship using Lewmar winches and Navtec rigging The Argentine crew on Matador lifted the TP52 World Championship this weekend on the Bay of Palma. They won this year’s title on count back ahead of the 2008 world champions Quantum Racing that also finished on 23 points after seven races. Matador, skippered by Guillermo Parada, maintains its perfect record in major regattas on these waters. Their triumph at Palma Vela in April with their new boats was the springboard for their season. With owner Alberto Roemmers Jr steering – as he did this week – they won the TP52 class at Copa del Rey in August, as the perfect build up to clinching the class world title. Matador features a full suite of Lewmar’s latest custom, ceramic treated, low profile, low windage carbon winches. The winch system comprises of 68-3 GP sheave base primaries, size 60-3 GPST mainsheet winches and 50-2 GPST runner winches. In the pit there is a driven 68-3 GPST winch with a sunken base for faster hoists and a low profile super lightweight 50 GP winch. All of the drums are treated with the distinctive white ceramic coating offering superior rope handling. Lewmar’s I-Beam pedestal unit is used to drive the winches. The I-Beam structure provides a stiffer platform, generating greater power input and therefore maximising output. These new systems also incorporate custom built, fully lubricated drivelines for greater efficiency. Matt Johnston, Lewmar Sales Director expressed his delight in having three of the top five competitors using Lewmar powered winch systems, “It was great to see Matador heading the fleet, with Synergy (RUS) in fourth and Bribon (ESP) fifth.” He explains; “Lewmar made a commitment to re-enter the race boat market four years ago. Our primary focus was on the TP52 fleet, as the pinnacle of cutting edge grand prix yacht design – it’s great to see this commitment come to fruition.” Lewmar was the first winch company to platform low profile, low windage ceramic-coated drum technology into this cutting edge Mediterranean-based fleet. Navtec also provide rod rigging for Matador’s spar along with PBO for its backstay. 1. Matador (ARG, Alberto Roemmers) – 23 points 2. Quantum Racing (USA, Terry Hutchinson) – 23 points 3. Artemis (SWE, Torbjorn Tornqvist) – 30 points 4. Synergy (RUS, Sergey Pichugin) – 30 points 5. Bribón (ESP, Gonzalo Araujo) – 35 points
